The History
Kingston Bagpuize, with it’s history that spans over a thousand years, had for centuries been the resident manor of aristocratic lords.
The neighbouring village of Southmoor, since Saxon times, has been owned by absentee landlords, firstly Abingdon Abbey and then St. John’s College, Oxford who still continue to be Lords of the Manor and current land owners.
Kingston Bagpuize House was re-fashioned in 1720 with its old part Saxon church being re-built in 1799 by John Blandy. His cousin Mary was a frequent visitor to Kingston Bagpuize House and in 1752 she became renowned as being the last woman ever to be hung in Oxford. She had poisoned her Father because he had disapproved of her lover!
